When Charity Storage began in the Fall of 2012, StorageMart was proud to be a charter member. So imagine how we felt to learn we were the leading fundraiser for the entire program in the 2013 calendar year.
The numbers tell the story. In 2013 Charity Storage collected more than $125,000 to be divided between Kure It Cancer Research, the Self Storage Association Foundation (SSAF) and the many local and national non-profit partners of participating self storage companies. Of that amount, $28,524.49 came directly from StorageMart. Add in $3,499 from Q4 of 2012 and to date StorageMart has contributed $32,023.49 to the program.
The way Charity Storage works is fairly simple. Participating storage companies like ours dedicate a storage unit at each of our properties to Charity Storage. This unit then becomes a collection point for donated items. Departing and current tenants, storage auction buyers and local residents can then donate items to Charity Storage in exchange for a tax deductible receipt. When the charity unit is filled, it gets added to the list of available units at the facility’s next public auction. The proceeds from the sale of the charity unit go to Charity Storage, which then divides the funds between Kure It, the SSAF and any non-profit organizations with which the storage facility is partnered.
StorageMart’s current non-profit partners are the American Red Cross, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Texas, the San Antonio Humane Society, Open Books (Chicago, IL), Lexington (KY) Habitat for Humanity, Women in Need (New York City), Wayside Waifs (Kansas City, MO) and the Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association.
We’re proud to be associated with Charity Storage and each of our wonderful NPO partners, but these fundraising efforts don’t happen without the great support of those in the communities we call home. So thank you to everyone who either donated items to the charity units located at each of our locations in the United States or purchased a charity unit at one of our auctions.
Our goal now is to remain the leading fundraiser in the Charity Storage program by being even more proactive in promoting the program, making ourselves easily available to collect donated items and promoting the auctions of our charity units.
