This summer has had something of a cloud hanging over it for the self storage industry. In early June, we lost our friend and colleague Robert Bret, who passed away unexpectedly while on vacation in Jamaica.
A veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, Robert was laid to rest with military honors on June 29 at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida.
Bret, 40, had been Execute Director of the Florida Self Storage Association for the past three years. “Robert was a quiet person and very dedicated in all aspects of his life,” FSSA President Lewis Pollock wrote in a letter to association members. “As big as he was physically, he was a softy. His quiet way and soft-spoken manner belied that big physical presence. He was truly a gentle man.”
Robert leaves behind Kylie, his 13-year old daughter and sister Nicole Handy. A fund has been established to provide for Kylie’s college education.
“Unfortunately, Robert was not prepared to leave this world so soon,” Handy wrote on fundraising site YouCaring.com. “We know he would want Kylie to attend college and would wholeheartedly approve of this fund for her. As a family, we [ask] in lieu of flowers any contributions go to help Kylie instead. Money doesn’t solve everything, and it will never replace a loving father, but your generosity will pay forward in ways we know you can appreciate.”
