6 energy saving tips for winter

For those of us who classify ourselves as “fall/winter people” our days of suffering through the heat and humidity and blazing sun are nearing an end. The days are getting cooler and the nights are getting crisp and soon we will begin to enjoy the colors of fall leaves.

For those self storage tenants who use their storage units for seasonal items it is time to think of packing in the shorts and summer wear and trading them in for coats and sweaters. Utilizing a self storage unit for your wardrobe is a great way to save closet space in your home, especially for those who have to share/fight over a shared closet space. By utilizing a storage unit you can take out the clothes that you know you will not need for the season and leave more hanging and drawer space for those clothes that you will actually use.

Not only can your wardrobe benefit from a seasonal storage unit, but your house and garage space can as well. In just a few short weeks your outdoor patio furniture and BBQ grill can move into storage and out of the snow and winter weather and you can pull out your snow blower and snow shovels.

While you are saving space with your self storage unit, think of ways that you can also save energy while you are preparing for the upcoming winter months.

Here are a few tips from Energy.Gov:

1.    Open south-facing curtain windows in the day to allow the sun to naturally heat up your house.
2.    Find DIY heavy-duty plastic sheeting from your neighborhood hardware store to cover any drafty windows that will allow cold air inside your toasty home.
3.    When you are out of your house or sleeping, you can save 10% a year on your bill by turning the thermostat back 10-15 degrees for eight hours.
4.    Check your furnace filters before the season begins and replace once a month or as needed
5.    Clean out all wood burning heaters and fireplaces before the onset of winter. Be sure and check the flue and dampers for a proper seal and keep these closed unless the fire is going. .
6.    When decorating for the holiday seasons in the winter months be sure and use LED light strings to reduce the cost of electricity when brightening up your home with holiday cheer.

While these tips will not be there to help you shovel snow or clear your car off the first morning you wake up with a windshield of ice, they can help you save energy and money during the cold winter months. Prepare your home for winter and get your seasonal items out of storage and you will be well on your way to enjoying the winter season.
