What is Psychometry?

On July 26 and 27, StorageMart will begin filming for a brand new, web-based television series called The Storage Medium ™.  Featuring noted psychic author, media personality and hypno-therapist Joyce Keller, The Storage Medium ™ will feature individuals submitting heirlooms, antiques and artifacts from their homes or storage units for psychic readings.  This particular metaphysical discipline is known as psychometry.

According to Merriam-Webster, psychometry is a “divination of facts concerning an object or its owner through contact with or proximity to the object.”  Practitioners and supporters of this form of extra-sensory perception believe objects hold an energy that is capable of transferring specific knowledge of the object’s history.

The term psychometry was coined by Joseph Rodes Buchanan, a medical doctor and professor of physiology at Electric Medial Institute in Covington, Kentucky, in 1842.  It was Buchanan who first popularized the theory that all things give off an emanation or energy and he believed psychometry would one day supersede empiric sciences.  In his “Manual of Psychometry”, first published in 1893, Buchanan wrote “the world is its own enduring monument; and that which is true of its physical, is likewise true of its mental career.  The discoveries of Psychometry will enable us to explore the history of man, as those of geology enable us to explore the history of the Earth.  There are mental fossils for psychologists as well as mineral fossils for the geologists; and I believe that hereafter the psychologist and the geologist will go hand in hand – the one portraying the Earth, its animals and its vegetation, while the other portrays the human beings who have roamed over its surface in the shadows.”

While the art of psychometry has primarily shifted to the worlds of popular culture and various sects of spiritualism, many believe in the validity of psychics using their abilities to act as psychic detectives and assist law enforcement in solving crimes.  A 1993 survey of the police departments in 50 of the largest cities in the United States showed 17 had actually employed or accepted the help of psychics in the investigation of crimes.

While it’s unlikely Joyce Keller will be solving any crimes as The Storage Medium™, she does hope to provide a connection between the show’s participants and the objects they submit to her for reading.

“Pyschometry can be very difficult because it’s so layered,” Keller said.  “By that I mean a person can ask me to read a piece of jewelry they are wearing, but it really belonged to their grandmother.  What I try to do is straddle the line between the seen and the unseen.  I use the energy or vibrations contained within an object and hopefully combine those impressions with what I’m feeling from the person who owns the object.”

Ms. Keller will often combine disciplines of metaphysics of extra-sensory perception to help make sense of the layers of energy she reads from an object.  “Birth dates are important as they are the one thing about a person’s true essence that cannot be changed,” Keller said.  “By asking for a person’s birthday I can zero in on them with a combination of astrology and psychotherapy.”

Taping of The Storage Medium™ will take place in Kansas City, Missouri at selected StorageMart locations.  For more information or to schedule an appointment with Ms. Keller for a free psychometric reading of one of your own possessions, click here.
