How to Protect Furniture in Storage

Furniture can contain a lifetime of memories. Your grandmother’s dining room set takes you back to Sunday dinners with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Your mother’s armoire reminds you of the evenings you watched her get ready for a night out with your father. An old writing desk evokes memories of your grandfather.

The dilemma is this: We don’t always have an immediate use for our heirlooms and antiques yet. At the same time, we certainly don’t want to part with them. It could be you’re saving these items for your son or daughter. Or maybe you’re hoping to someday move to a home where you can showcase your treasures. What you know for sure is that you don’t want to get rid of them.

You could take your chances and stick your furniture in an attic or basement, but you will be risking significant damage from heat, cold, humidity, dust, and the elements.

There is, however, another option.

Storing Furniture with Climate Control

Renting a self storage unit with climate control has numerous benefits, including the following:

  • A constant temperature keeps wood from warping or cracking.
  • Leather remains supple when not subjected to temperature swings.
  • Low humidity prevents fabric from becoming moldy or mildewed.
  • Low humidity also prevents the metal parts of furniture from corroding.

There are a few steps you’ll want to take to make sure your furniture stays in great condition: First, make sure it’s clean when you store it. Then, don’t stack items on top of each other, and make sure to wrap your furniture in old blankets or drop cloths.
