6 Great Family Activities in Omaha

Omaha has a lot going for it, including the fact that it has the best zoo in the world, according to TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice awards. Keep reading for a half dozen outings sure to entertain—and inform—your whole family.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

Stroll through Lied Jungle, which is America’s largest indoor rainforest, to see the hippos, tapirs, monkeys, macaws, and more. Then, switch things up and head to the African Grasslands to check out the giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, bongos, and antelope.

The Durham Museum

Union Station opened in 1931, dazzling the 10,000 travelers who passed through daily with its sculptured plaster ceiling boasting painted gold and silver leaf trim, blue Belgian marble columns, and six huge chandeliers. The last train left the station in 1971, but the restored building now functions as a regional history museum. Don’t miss the original soda fountain and old-fashioned candy shop.

Omaha Children’s Museum

Permanent exhibits include an Art Smart Center where kids can paint, dance, create, and tinker. Fantastic Future Me allows kids to take a photo of their face and then drag and drop elements representing different careers and grown-up roles onto their own “Future Me.”

Lauritzen Gardens

Discover 100 acres of gardens, including a rose garden and a Victorian garden. Kids will enjoy the children’s garden and the model railroad garden. If the weather’s not cooperating, warm up in the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory, which features indoor tropical and temperate garden spaces.

Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge

This 3,000-foot-long pedestrian bridge crosses the Missouri River—and also connects the states of Nebraska and Iowa. Walk halfway across, put a foot in each state and you’ll be doing what the locals call “Bobbing.”

Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari

This drive-thru adventure offers an up-close look at elk, deer, bison, wolves, black bears, and even trumpeter swans, the largest waterfowl in North America.
