If you’ve recently shopped for a new washer or dryer, you know that they are an investment.
So if you find yourself in a situation where you have to store yours for any period of time, it’s a good idea to do it the right way.
Here’s how to get the job done—in three easy steps.
The first thing you’ll want to do is clean your washer and dryer. You can clean the inside of your washer by running it for one cycle without any clothes—on hot and with a half cup of vinegar to remove any residue. Once that’s done, wipe down both the interior and exterior of your machine and give it time to thoroughly dry.
To clean your dryer, just wipe it down and make sure that the lint trap is empty. Also allow adequate time for your dryer to dry.
Locate your user’s manual (or look it up online) to learn how to properly disconnect your appliances before moving them. Don’t forget to turn off the gas, electric, and water before beginning. Wrap your appliances in blankets or drop cloths, which can also be used to protect them while in storage.
Whether you’re storing your appliances in a storage unit or your garage, it’s a good idea to place them on wooden pallets to prevent condensation from forming.
If you live in a place with high humidity, you’ll want to avoid putting your appliances in a storage unit that is not climate-controlled. Today’s washers and dryers are sophisticated—and expensive—machines with electronic components that could be damaged by high humidity. This is obviously more critical if you’ll be storing your appliances for more than just a few weeks.
Some experts also suggest storing your washer and dryer with the doors cracked open. No matter where—or how—you store your appliances, make sure they are completely dry before you move them.
Lastly, protect your appliances from dust and debris by covering them with blankets, sheets, or some other breathable material.
