Everybody’s Irish in Iowa—at least on Saint Patrick’s Day. Happily, there’s something for everyone, ranging from a family friendly parade to a very late night at the pub.
Hosted by the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick of Central Iowa, this parade launches at noon on March 17 and will feature Irish musicians, leprechauns, bagpipes, and all things Irish.
Show up in green from head to toe and race for free beer—for you and all your fellow lads or lassies. Here’s how it works. The women start at 10 a.m. The men start five and a half minutes later. If a guy wins the race, every man gets a free beer at the after party. If a woman wins, all the ladies are drinking. There’s also a “best dressed” award, so come decked out in your best Saint Paddy’s duds.
Saint Patrick’s Day Events in Des Moines Pubs
There’s no shortage of Irish pubs and, at most of them, the party gets started early with the breakfast you’ll need to fuel you through the rest of the day.
Annie’s patio opens at 6 a.m. sharp with free green eggs and ham. The block party gets started at noon with green beer and music all day by Sons of Gladys Kravitz, Brushville, and Pie in the Sky. The party goes on rain or shine, so come prepared.
Saint Patrick’s Day starts bright and early here as well, with an Irish breakfast at 6 a.m., followed by the raising of the Irish flag at 7 a.m. The corned beef and cabbage comes out at 10 a.m.—and stays out till it’s gone. The rest of the day is a flurry of bagpipes, leprechaun kiss shots, prizes, and more. Kids are allowed until 3:30 p.m.
The Royal Mile is actually a British pub, but that doesn’t mean Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated any less enthusiastically. Arrive at 10 a.m. for corned beef and cabbage and green beer, followed by a performance by the Iowa Scottish Pipes and Drums at noon.
This two-day event, held March 16-17 at Cowles Commons, combines the best of all worlds—viewing of the first and second rounds of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the Iowa Craft Beer Tent, seven food trucks and, of course, Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations on Saturday.
