Winter Get-Aways Near Virginia Beach

There’s no doubt about what to do in Virginia Beach in the summer: Put on a bathing suit and head for the water. But winter in this coastal city offers plenty of charms of its own.

6 Virginia Beach Winter Get-Aways

Whether your thing is swinging a club or looking for whales, Virginia Beach has options. Here are a half dozen of our favorites.

Whale and Wildlife Watching

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center offers 2-hour outings in search of whales, dolphins, seals, and seabirds. Species you might see include humpback whales, minke whales, fin whales, harbor seals, and more.

Restaurant Week

Virginia Beach Restaurant Week (Feb. 19-25) features dozens of restaurants and—for the first time ever—breakfast is included this year. Here’s how it works: Participating restaurants will feature delicious—and specially priced—meals. Breakfast starts at $5. Two-course lunches start at $10, and three-course dinners start at $20.

Outdoor Art

You’ll find world-class sculptures and colorful murals in almost every corner of Virginia Beach, including Donald Lipski’s amazing stainless-steel installation featuring 10 canoes suspended from the air in a star pattern.

Horseback Riding on the Beach

Horseback riding on the beach is a bucket-list item for many of us—and Virginia Beach is a great place to cross it off. Both half-hour and one-hour guided tours are available throughout the year.

History

Virginia isn’t just for lovers; it’s also for lovers of history. Colonial Williamsburg is a nice day trip from Virginia Beach—and was recently named a “Top 2019 Travel Destination” by The New York Times. Black History Month programs and events highlight the fact that more than half of all 18th Century Williamsburg residents were African American.

Golf

With average highs between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit in February and March, you obviously won’t be swimming. But those temperatures are great for golfers—and the area has more than its share of top-rated golf courses.
