How to Prepare for Roots N Blues N BBQ

  • RNB Festival tips

If you're thinking about heading to Columbia, Missouri, for Roots N Blues N BBQ, make sure to come prepared. Being ill-prepared for attending this Midwest music festival can cause you to have a poor experience. To ensure you're ready for this big and lively event, consider some of these tips.

Bring Chairs

Not all music festivals have chairs or seating. Many of these types of events are held outside. This allows the area to be equipped with different stages. Different artists can play at the same time and attract more people to the show.

While standing will certainly afford you the best view, you don't want to be standing the entire time. Most festivals offer park benches and other areas to sit down and take a load off, but you should bring your own folding chairs because fixed seating areas fill up fast. It's not a bad idea to bring along a small table, too, if you intend on eating at the festival. It can make relaxing so much easier.

Of course, you'll need somewhere to store those chairs when you're not at the festival. Our facility is a great place to hold your chairs and tables when you don't need them so they're not taking up space in your garage or home. Whenever the next music festival arrives, you can easily grab your chairs out of storage and be ready for a great time.

Know the Schedule

Roots N Blues N BBQ is an Americana music festival featuring some of the top acts in the genre. If you're attending the first day of the event, Friday, September 27, expect to see the following acts perform at the Missouri Lottery Stage:

• Violet and the Undercurrents: 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

• John Nemeth: 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

• Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real: 7:30 - 8:45 p.m.

• Marren Morris: 9:15 - 10:45 p.m.

The following performers will be playing on the Great Southern Bank Stage:

• The Lacewings: 5:00 - 5:45 p.m.

• Patty Griffin: 6:15 - 7:30 p.m.

• John Prine: 8:00 - 9:30 p.m.

Knowing who is playing and when will help you plan your visit.

Arrive Early

No matter who your favorite artist is or what time they perform, try to arrive at the festival early.

For one, you'll be able to beat most of the traffic. You'll also get a better parking spot. Once you arrive, you can just relax and wait until your preferred artist performs.

Getting to the performance stages is another feat. People typically gather around the stage a half-hour to an hour before the artist performs, depending on their popularity. If you want an excellent place to watch the bands, you'll want to head over to the stage at least an hour before their performance begins.

Prepare for Weather

A blues music festival like Roots is held outside, so be ready for any kind of weather. Umbrellas aren't permitted at the event, so think about bringing a set of ponchos in case of rain. You can wear them and be protected from the rain without the hassle of an umbrella. If showers are in the forecast, it's a good idea to bring some heat packs, too. Otherwise, you might get chilly and have to leave the festival early.

Pack everything you might need in a small clear bag or squish it all in your pockets. Obviously, the small bag will let you carry more, but you'll have to go through a security check for it.

Besides wet weather, you also need to be ready for heat as the festival grounds won't be shaded. Sunscreen and sunglasses are great ways to keep yourself protected and cooled. You might also want to think about bringing cooling pads you can place on your neck or against your face. Also, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head from the sun.

Finally, drink lots of water. Roots N Blues N BBQ offers free water inside the gates. There is also a water refilling station near the Missouri Lottery Stage. Staying hydrated can help you have a healthy time at the festival.

Other Odds and Ends

You're allowed to bring blankets to the festival in lieu of chairs. If you have small children, you can bring them in their strollers, or you can use a small wagon to transport them. Feel free to take pictures of your favorite artists; just remember that professional recording equipment is not permitted.

It's a sure bet you won't go hungry while at the festival. Well over a dozen food vendors are scheduled to be at the event, and you can get everything from pizza to tacos to barbecue to coffee.

Here's another great thing about Roots N Blues N BBQ: You can leave your money at home. All attendees will receive a wristband allowing them access to the event. This wristband also allows you to make purchases without the need for money, debit cards, or credit cards. The bands use RFID technology, making purchases fast and easy.
