Five Hacks for Organizing a Storage Unit

Self storage units can make your life a whole lot easier—and more organized.

That’s true even if you just stuff a bunch of boxes in them. You’ll still be freeing up space elsewhere and taking care of business. But to get the most out of your storage unit—and save future you a whole lot of hassle—it makes sense to take just a bit more time and do things the right way.

Storage Organization Tips

It doesn’t take much effort or time to keep your storage unit organized. Here are five easy tips for getting the job done.

1. Label Everything and Keep a List

This is without a doubt the most important thing you can do to keep your storage unit organized—and to keep your sanity. Get yourself a black permanent marker and label your boxes in big, bold letters. Go one step further by making a list of everything you have in your storage unit.

2. Leave a Path Down the Middle of Your Unit

While it may be tempting to just stuff as much into your storage unit as you can, you’ll pay for it later. Instead, leave a narrow path down the center of your storage unit open, allowing you to easily access items on both sides and the back.

3. Keep Items You Access Frequently in the Front of the Unit

This tip may seem fairly obvious, but in the haste of trying to get the job done, it can be tempting to move too quickly. Instead, take a few moments to think about the items you are likely to be using first—and make sure to store those in the front of your unit where they can be accessed quickly.

4. Install Shelving

You can only stack boxes so high without compromising the items on the bottom. By bringing in metal shelving, you can make use of all of the vertical space in your storage unit.

5. Create a Map of Your Storage Unit

This doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Simply divide a piece of paper into four quadrants and list what items are stored in each segment of your unit.
