Finding Local Bike Trails Near You

Looking for an afternoon on the trail in Des Moines? There are 32 routes, ranging from a half mile to 89 miles.

How about Miami, Florida? You have 26 options, including one trail that takes you through the Florida Keys.

Let’s try a bigger challenge: Chaska, Minnesota. We actually found 54 trails in the area, including a shaded stretch around a lake.

How do we know all that? TrailLink—a tremendous resource for finding routes across the country that was founded in 1986 by a group of people determined to create a network of trails for both cyclists and hikers to enjoy.

The initial focus of the group was to convert unused former rail lines into trails. Since then, the group has worked to establish completely new trails. There is also a program to create trails alongside active rail lines.

Today, there are more than 31,000 miles of trails, making it easier than ever to find bike ride routes near you.

Cycling Routes in the City

If you’re in a city and simply looking to get from point A to point B, you’ll want to check out the app LaneSpotter, which uses crowd-sourced data to map out the best route in more than a dozen cities. Users rate their route, ranging from “very safe” to “avoid.”

Good ole’ Google Maps isn’t perfect, but if you choose cycling as your mode of transportation, it can get you where you want to go while avoiding streets and highways where bikes aren’t permitted.
