Climate-Controlled Storage for Art

  • A crowd of people stand in front of the “Mona Lisa”, taking pictures.
Every once in a while, you get lucky.

And that’s exactly what happened when a painting worth millions was recently found in an attic in Des Moines, Iowa.

The painting, "Apollo and Venus" was done in the year 1600 by Dutch master Otto van Veen. It was found in a dark and dusty corner of Hoyt Sherman Place, a theater built in 1877.

Although it did have some damage, a four-month restoration project helped bring the painting back to its former glory.

Unless you have a team of trained art conservationists at your beck and call, you might want to be more careful with your own art collection.

Fine Art Storage Facilities

Whether you’re an artist, own a gallery, or have your own art collection, there are usually times when art needs to go into storage.

For most of us, our “extra” storage is in the basement, attic, or garage. That may cut it for some items, but it definitely doesn’t for art, which can be destroyed by extremes in temperature and humidity and, of course, exposure to dust, dirt, and water.

The good news is there’s a solution for those who are short on storage. The self storage industry has taken off across the United States, and for good reason. Instead of, say, renting a bigger gallery or buying a bigger home, you can rent a self storage unit for an affordable monthly rate—and without any long-term commitment.

If you’re an artist, for example, you can rent a unit when inventory is high. But if you have a successful show and inventory is low, you can get rid of the storage unit, without any hassles.

The key, at least when it comes to art, is to make sure you rent a climate-controlled unit. Sure, they cost a little more than a regular unit. But you’ll be buying the peace-of-mind of knowing that your masterpieces are protected.
