How to Store a Bicycle Over the Winter

  • An older couple goes mountain biking as the sun sets behind them.
Your bike has taken you up mountains, along rivers, into town, and anywhere else you’ve wanted to go. And now you’re going to simply shove it in the corner of your garage until spring?

Wrong.

With just a little bit of effort, you can store your bike the right way—and make sure it’s ready to go when you are next spring.

Preparing a Bicycle for Winter Storage

Your first task is—you guessed it—to thoroughly clean your bike. That means wiping down every inch, which will give you the chance to look for damage or rust to the frame or chain. Use a small brush to clean between the links of the chain.

If you’re going to be storing a bike in an unheated space, it’s also a good idea to lubricate the cables and chain.

Next, take a close look at your wheels. Is the tread still good? How about the brake pads? If they don’t have a lot of life left, take the time to change them now so that you’re ready to roll in the spring-time.

One final warning: Be careful where you put your bike. Letting it sit on the concrete floor of a garage or basement could draw moisture from the tires, drying them out. A simple solution is to put a rug or rubber mat underneath the tires.

Lastly, if you hang your bike, be sure to do so by the frame—not the wheels.
