House Feeling Cramped? Check Out Our Storage Unit Size Guide

Imagine sitting down to read a book, looking around the room and seeing everything in its place. If you were to open the closet door, toys would not topple out. Kitchen cabinets are nicely organized. The basement does not look as if hoarders have set up camp there.

It’s a fact that we all have a certain amount of stuff we need or want to hang onto. But it doesn’t have to be everywhere, creating chaos and destroying calm.

Consider getting your home back on track by renting a self storage unit. Mom may not want to throw all her high school trophies away, but they sure can go in a storage unit. Same goes for Christmas and even Halloween decorations (when did that become a thing?). How about all of the baby gear you’re saving? Then there’s your ski and snowboarding gear. You get the point … we all have a lot of stuff that we don’t use on a regular basis.

So what’s the right storage unit for you?

Clean, Bright, and Easy

The first thing you’ll want to look for is a self storage facility that’s clean and well-lit. After all, your goal here is to bring order to your life—not another mess.

Look for a facility that makes things easy. You’ll want to see wide hallways, convenient loading bays, and dollies and hand carts that are available for use.

Also, is there video surveillance? And are disc locks offered? (Combination padlocks are notoriously unreliable.)

How Big Is a 5×10 Storage Unit? How Big Is a 10×20 Storage Unit?

Self storage units range in size from about 20 square feet to over 300 square feet.

Need help visualizing that space?

The smallest unit available is 5×5—about the size of a standard walk-in closet. As an example, you’d be able to fit a twin-size mattress set, a dresser, and several boxes in this space.

A medium storage unit—say 10×10—is the size of a typical bedroom. This would be big enough to fit a Jet Ski or motorcycle or even a small trailer. It could also hold large furniture, such as sofas or king-sized beds.

A large 10×20 unit is big enough to store the entire contents of a small house.

Climate Controlled Self Storage

If you’re storing temperature-sensitive items, such as electronics or even clothing, make sure that the unit you choose is climate-controlled. This is especially important in either very hot or very cold locations.
