Live at Home vs. Senior Living

  • A senior couple enjoys breakfast together.
Maybe you want to remain in your home because you value your independence—and because you want to stay active and involved in the community.

And yet, those are precisely the benefits offered by today’s modern senior living communities. Many of them boast clubhouses with exercise rooms, classes, and swimming pools. You can also enjoy chef-prepared meals at a variety of restaurants. There may also be a golf course, movie theater, or even a game room.

The point is, senior living isn’t what it used to be.

Live at Home After Retirement

At the same time, however, there are definitely things you may be giving up by moving.

Maybe you have neighbors you’ve known for years. Or maybe you live in a 4,000-square-foot home and frequently have family visit on overnight trips.

Then there’s your yard. For some people, gardening and lawncare is a joy they’re reluctant to give up. For others, it’s a burden they can’t get rid of quickly enough.

Where to Live After Retirement

The key is to ask yourself, honestly, what there is to gain and to lose by making a move. And, when considering a senior living community, realize that there are now more options than ever.

Don’t make a snap judgement based on what you think senior living is like. After all, you just might find that it provides more opportunities to be active and engaged than life in a large house does.

Where to Live After Retirement and StorageMart

One of the disadvantages of senior living communities is the lack of storage space compared to homes with basements, attics, extra bedrooms, and garages. There’s typically no room to store things like seasonal decorations, items that you may be saving for future generations, and even off-season clothing.

There is, however, an easy fix. At StorageMart, you can rent a unit as small as 25 square feet or so—or up to the size of a garage. We offer affordable self storage units that can be rented on a month-by-month basis and are always clean and well lit. Need more info? Check out our storage unit guide or rent a unit online today.
