When it comes to emerging medical treatments, the road from research lab to bedside table can be long and winding. With that in mind, the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (F.A.S.T.) has taken aim with a new targeted approach to bring practical treatments into medical practice as quickly as possible for the affected children and their families.<\/p>\n
Often misdiagnosed as the more commonly known cerebral palsy or an autism spectrum disorder, Angelman Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder affecting approximately 1 in 15,000 live births. Angelman Syndrome is characterized by developmental delays, motor coordination issues, balance problems and epilepsy caused by a single gene disorder.<\/p>\n

The search to find treatments is moving forward with incredible speed primarily due to the dedication of folks within the community like those at F.A.S.T. Just a few years after their initial founding, they were able to do four FDA-approved compound tests on mice essentially curing the symptoms genetically on an animal level. These promising results are paving the way for a human trial, but the standard process is anything but fast.<\/p>\n
Commonplace but very outdated, the method of collecting donations and asking for grant applications once a year in the hopes of finding a promising scientific study are very slow. In its place, F.A.S.T. has enacted a model that pulls several parts of the research process in-house, cutting down on delays and amplifying results. In fact, with the advancements made in the last few years, Angelman Syndrome is currently one of the most promising fields of scientific research.<\/p>\n
