Choosing a senior living community<\/a> is, in many ways, like choosing any other type of housing. You can opt to keep your costs low or you can spend more to get more.<\/p>\n

In fact, you\u2019ll find that there are now more options than ever, thanks to the Baby Boomers.<\/p>\n

Your challenge? To ask the right questions to find the best fit for you.<\/p>\n

1. What Housing Options are Available?<\/h2>\n

On one end of the spectrum, you\u2019ll find multi-bedroom units with attached garages. On the other hand, you\u2019ll find units that include services like medication assistance. Ask what the different options are\u2014and then ask to see floorplans or even actual units.<\/p>\n

2. Tell Me About Your Residents?<\/h2>\n

Ask about the ratio of men to women, if that\u2019s important to you. Or about the ratio of married residents to single residents. Ask about the average age of residents. All of these questions will help you decide if the community is a good fit for you. And don\u2019t forget what many people find to be the most important question: Are pets allowed?<\/p>\n

3. What Services are Included?<\/h2>\n

The range of services offered could run the gamut from light housekeeping to full-blown care. Ask for both a list of services that are included, as well as a list of services that cost extra.<\/p>\n

4. What Dining Options are Available?<\/h2>\n

The set-up might be as simple as a group dining hall. Or you might find that there are multiple options, including a caf\u00e9 and even a pub. Take a look at the various menus. Ask if there\u2019s a chef on site. Ask if they can cater to special needs, such as a gluten-free or low-carb diet.<\/p>\n

5. What Transportation Services are Offered?<\/h2>\n

Is transportation available on a regular basis, such as to the grocery store? Can rides to your doctor or dentist be arranged? If so, what do they cost? Are outings to places like movie theaters or museums offered?<\/p>\n

6. What Do You Do for Fun?<\/h2>\n

Some senior living communities feel more like resorts, offering things like shuffleboard, fitness classes, bowling, spas, and movie theaters. Are there gardens, patios, or places just to sit and enjoy the great outdoors? Beyond the physical amenities, what kinds of clubs, seminars, and groups are available?<\/p>\n

Are There Accommodations for Visitors?<\/h2>\n

This is especially important if your family lives out of town. Some senior living communities offer guest suites for your visitors\u2014and even things like playrooms for visiting grandchildren. Also be sure to ask what kind of time\/age restrictions might be in place for your guests.<\/p>\n
