According to the\u00a0American Foundation of Suicide Prevention<\/a>, or the\u00a0AFSP,\u00a0suicide is the 10<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0leading cause of death in the\u00a0United States, and in 2019, over 47,000 Americans died by suicide.\u00a0For people with suicidal thoughts, it\u00a0can\u00a0feel\u00a0impossible\u00a0to escape.\u00a0Finding help in that darkness can feel next to\u00a0impossible, which is why the\u00a0AFSP<\/a>\u00a0helps people understand\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0never walking out of the darkness alone\u00a0–\u00a0by walking with them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday, September 25<\/span>th<\/span>,\u00a0StorageMart\u00a0Assistant Manager,\u00a0Nicole\u00a0Nischan,\u00a0took part\u00a0in\u00a0the Out of the Darkness Walk in Virginia Beach.\u00a0We talked to Nicole to learn more about the experience,\u00a0and\u00a0she was kind enough to tell us about\u00a0how others can get involved:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When did you first get started with the Walk out of Darkness cause?<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

This was my 1<\/span>st\u00a0<\/span>year attending.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How did you first get involved?<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

I was inspired to get involved by my own experiences. I Have worked hard this past year to get <\/span>where I am today.\u00a0I have\u00a0lost\u00a0too\u00a0many loved ones to this darkness. I\u00a0saw the light\u00a0and\u00a0want<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to share it\u00a0with\u00a0others.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During the walk, what is the atmosphere like?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The atmosphere is filled with love and hope. You see the sadness in people\u2019s eyes but seeing <\/span>everyone come together you then see their eyes beginning to open and see the sparkle in\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0eyes. It is so wonderful to see the community come together and unite and spread the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Any memorable stories from the most recent walk or past walks?<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

This was my first walk, and I can only tell my story. I am a survivor and seeing the community <\/span>come together and walk was just breathtaking. I also lost a family member this year to suicide\u00a0<\/span>and dedicated this walk in her memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I understand most everyone walks because they or someone they know has been impacted by<\/b> <\/span>suicide. Whom did you walk for this time?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I walked for myself (I am a Survivor) going on 3 years now. Also, my family member Jenny and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>classmate Jed.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What was your takeaway from participating?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

My takeaway from participating is seeing the community come together. These have been <\/span>some\u00a0dark times and we all need to know that there is light beyond the darkness. Keep shining\u00a0<\/span> and\u00a0Thank You Storage Mart<\/a> for supporting this cause that is\u00a0very close\u00a0to my heart.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
