Tiny Living: How to Right Size Your Home

  • An interior view of a rustic tiny home.
Sometimes the best way to live large is by going tiny.

And that’s because of all the freedom—and opportunity—that tiny living offers. Instead of vacuuming the house, you can go for a fall hike. Instead of paying your mortgage, you can take a cruise. Instead of dreading your tax bill, you can enjoy the day.

The only problem? You’ve got a whole house worth of stuff.

Downsizing Home Tips

To fit into a tiny home, you’ll have to change your attitude toward your possessions. Don’t let your possessions define who you are. Here are a few tips to get you started.

• Don’t keep something because you might use it someday or because you want to use it. Only keep stuff that you actually use.
• Don’t keep any kitchen gadgets that have just one use, like bread makers or ice-cream makers.
• Go digital with your books and movies.
• Streamline your morning routine. Use the same kind of shampoo/toothpaste as your housemate. Get rid of things you rarely use, like hot rollers.
• Replace large items with smaller versions, such as your TV and furniture.
• Donate any clothing you have not worn in the last year. Even better, take note of what’s in your laundry basket from week to week. Those are the clothes to hang onto.
• Edit collectibles and keepsakes down to your very favorites.

Downsizing Your Home and StorageMart

Tiny living has so many advantages, but it also has its challenges, especially when it comes to storage space (basically, there isn’t any). Where do you keep your camping gear, skis, or even your off-season clothing?

Luckily, there is an easy fix. At StorageMart, you can rent a unit as small as 25 square feet or so—or up to the size of a garage. We offer affordable self storage units that can be rented on a month-by-month basis and are always clean and well lit. Need more info? Check out our storage unit guide or rent a unit online today.
