Different Types of Storage Containers for Organization

Whether you are shopping online or in person at one of the many home goods stores, the sheer amount of different storage containers available can be overwhelming. So, which one is right for you and your needs? Here is a quick guide on different types of storage containers to help you organize your home, office, or storage unit.

Storage Container Options

Usually, the most common need for storage containers is simply organization. It could be organizing the documents on your desk with a metal basket, or you may need a large plastic tub to store all your winter clothing. Whatever the reason, it’s important to know the pros and cons of each type.

1. Plastic Storage Bins

These are some of the most popular and commonly used types of storage containers. You’ll see them used in basements to store holiday decorations, or in garages filled with old shoes. They are lightweight, durable and usually very affordable. You can find plastic storage bins pretty much anywhere – IKEA, online stores, Target or Walmart – it’s up to you.

However, plastic storage bins are not always the best choice for long-term storage as they can be susceptible to cracking or breaking over time, especially in extreme temperatures.

2. Metal Storage Bins

Metal bins are another popular option, especially for industrial applications. They’re generally more expensive than plastic storage bins, but they are also much more durable and last longer. Metal bins can last for years, even with heavy use, you just have to prevent them from rusting. The downside of using metal bins is that they can be difficult to move around, and they’re not the best choice for storing delicate items.

Apart from the metal storage bins that are completely enclosed, wired metal bins are a great solution for multiple uses. For example, they’re for organizing papers and documents on your desk or you could use them to organize the snacks in your pantry.

3. Fabric Storage Bins

These are a solid option if you need a storage bin that is lightweight and easy to move around. They also come in a variety of colors and patterns to match your décor. Generally, fabric storage bins are small cubes that can have lids, or not, to store clothes, shoes, or toys.

The main con of fabric bins is that they are not as durable as other types of storage bins and are usually not waterproof. Fabric bins also won’t last as long as wooden or metal as they are prone to being ripped or broken after many uses.

4. Wooden Storage Bins

Wooden storage bins offer a more classic look that can complement any home. They are typically very durable and can last for years if stored and cleaned correctly. But wooden bins are usually quite heavy, making them difficult to move around. They are also generally not waterproof, so make sure not to store items that can be damaged by moisture.
