How to Achieve Your Resolutions this New Year

New Year, New Resolutions

It’s that time of year again. The holidays are over and New Year’s Day is here bringing with it parades, toasts, celebrations and New Year’s Resolutions. If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably set a list of resolutions, achieved one or two, and forgot or dismissed the rest. Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. In fact, about 92% of people who make New Year’s resolutions fail to keep them, with only 8% actually achieving their goals.1 Here are a few tips to help you achieve your resolutions this year.

Keep It Simple

One of the easiest things you can do to help you achieve your goals is to keep your resolutions simple. This doesn’t mean that the ideas or goals have to be rudimentary, but keeping the actual goal relatively simple helps keep things in perspective. People tend to make huge lists or extreme makeover goals. While the idea is laudable, competing priorities and commitments can push your resolutions to the backburner. It’s better to make small resolutions that are attainable and work on them over the course of the year as opposed to sweeping life-changing lists that may never gain traction. The important part of New Year’s Resolutions is recognizing that lifestyle change is important and working toward that goal.

Make It Doable

Another mistake people make when forming their New Year’s Resolutions is to make the goal unmeasurable or intangible. For example, a blanket “Get into Shape” has no quantifiable aspects. Make attainable goals, such as “Lose 20 pounds by March 1st” or “Stop using electronics at family meal time.” These are goals that you can measure whether or not you are finding success, and help create a sense of completion.
