Keeping It Sparkly and Bright: How to Clean Christmas Ornaments

Imagine if you didn’t dust your house for an entire year.

Yet, for some reason, it’s so easy to unpack dusty Christmas ornaments and hang them directly on the tree without a thought.

Even if they’ve been stored properly, ornaments should be cleaned before they make their appearance on the tree. They’ll look shinier and brighter but, even more importantly, it will help keep them in good condition for years to come.

How to Clean Vintage Christmas Ornaments

Before you begin, it’s a good idea to put on latex gloves. Even the oil from your hands can damage the paint on ornaments.

What you’re trying to accomplish here it to gently remove dust. To that end, use a dry dust cloth; never a wet rag. For especially delicate ornaments (such as those with glitter) you’ll want the even lighter touch of a feather duster. For detail work, use a small paintbrush or even a makeup brush to get into hard-to-reach places.

If minor repairs are needed, start with Elmer’s Glue, which can be quickly wiped away. If that doesn’t do the trick, try a hot glue gun.

How to Clean Glass Christmas Ornaments

For your more ordinary glass bulbs, it’s fine to spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth and wipe them clean.
