Hotel Travel Tips for Seniors

Some of us sleep like babies when we’re away from home. But then there are the rest of us.

Don’t leave your good night’s sleep to chance. With a few simple steps, you can make your hotel feel more like home, which will leave you ready for whatever fun lies ahead the next day.

Choose Your Room Carefully

A lot of noise is a sure way to ruin a good night’s sleep. Ask for a room that’s a good distance away from both elevators and the ice machine. In general, rooms that are on higher floors are quieter. If necessary, pack earplugs or a white noise machine.

Be Careful with Pills

First of all, you’ll want to make sure you pack them in your carry-on luggage. Some people also advise bringing your written prescription along as well—just in case something happens to your medication. Lastly, once at your hotel, keep your pills packed away, especially if they have “street” value.

Plan for the Middle of the Night

Does waking up in the middle of the night in a strange place leave you disoriented? Leave the bathroom light on (with the door shut) or maybe even bring a nightlight. Don’t leave suitcases on the floor, where they might trip you up, and move any chairs or tables that could also get in your way.

Check the Temperature

There’s nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night either too hot or too cold and not being able to figure out the thermostat. Before you turn in for the night, take a closer look at your thermostat. And don’t wait till bedtime to adjust the temperature. You may have to do a bit of experimenting to get it just right.

Traveling with Grandkids?

If you’ve got the little ones along, don’t count on being able to get a roll-away bed. If you call ahead and find out they’re not available, consider an air mattress with a built-in pump like this one from Amazon. They’re easy to set up and don’t require a lot of packing room.

The Self Storage Solution

One of the nice things about vacation—whether you’re staying in a hotel or a rental home—is getting away from all the clutter that so many of us have in our homes.

If you find that your home is getting cramped, you might consider renting a self storage unit. At StorageMart, we offer clean, well-lit storage units in a variety of sizes—all of which can be rented on a month-to-month basis. Check out our storage unit guide or rent a unit online today.
