Travelling with Grandchildren This Year

Vacations and grandchildren go together like peanut-butter and jelly. You get to see incredible sites through the fresh eyes of your grandchildren. They, in turn, benefit from your patience, knowledge of the world, and incredible love for them.

Places to Take Your Grandchildren

So where should you go with your grandchildren? Your choices, of course, are almost endless. We suggest you let the parents do Disney, freeing you up to take your little loves someplace where you can unwind, enjoy life, and maybe even learn something new.

Celebrate Chocolate and History

Hersheypark isn’t a hard sell to the grandkids. After all, you get both rollercoasters and chocolate. Sweeten the deal for yourself by staying at The Hotel Hershey, where the spa offers treatments such as the Whipped Cocoa Bath, Chocolate Bean Polish, and Cocoa Facial. You can even sneak a little learning and history into the trip by venturing to the nearby Gettysburg National Military Site.

Enter the World of Harry Potter

Mickey isn’t the only game in town. Head to Orlando to check out Universal Studios Florida. Middle-aged kids will be blown away by The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which brings both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley to life. Younger kids, meanwhile, will find their favorite yellow friends at Despicable Me Minions Mayhem. Seuss Landing offers a fanciful trip back in time for everyone. Even better, Universal Studios offers several hotels within an easy (and scenic) walking distance of the park.

Fall for the Falls

If you haven’t been to Niagara Falls in a while, you’ll find that the entire area has evolved into a lively entertainment district. Take a ride on the Niagara Skywheel for an overview of all the fun to be had. Dinner atop the Skylon Tower is another great way to take in the legendary view.

Take in Yellowstone—and the Grand Tetons

Yellowstone National Park should be high on anyone’s list of amazing things to do, but you’ve probably also heard that it can be a real zoo in the summer. This is especially true when a stubborn bison (or a whole herd) decides to block the main road! Plus, hotel rooms sell out up to a year in advance. One idea is to make your base in the Grand Teton National Park, which is just south of Yellowstone, and also awe-inspiring in its own right.

Spend Time in a Chautauqua

The Chautauqua Institution in New York, and Lakeside Chautauqua in Ohio, were leaders in a movement that began more than 100 years ago. Today, they’re both still going strong. You’ll find scenic lake views (Chautauqua Lake in New York and Lake Erie in Ohio), along with a mind-expanding array of lectures, concerts, art classes, and more. You can play shuffleboard, go swimming, hit the greens, take a yoga class, or just enjoy the beauty of these classic summer resorts—and ice cream, of course.
