We love pies. And if you’re like us, the craving for home-style pies grows exponentially as the holidays approach. Few things invoke a feeling of comfort like the smell of a fresh baked pie. Peggy Jean’s epitomizes this sensation, creating amazing made-from-scratch pies in Columbia, Missouri.
Peggy Jean’s Pies opened its doors in 1994, the brainchild of Peggy Day and Jeanne Wagster (now Plumley). Like a hallmark story, the pie shop was founded using old family recipes and quickly became a household name in Columbia, as well as garnering national recognition for their large and small pies. With quality stemming from a passion for pie-making, Peggy Jean’s flourished for ten years, but in 2004, Peggy’s health declined sharply and the beloved pie shop closed its doors.
That was not to be the end for Peggy Jean’s Pies, however. In 2014, after a ten-year hiatus. Jeanne Plumley and her daughter, Rebecca Miller, relied on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter to raise the $10,000 necessary to reopen their doors. Support flooded in, and the two were thrust back into the pie making business at a rate that exceeded expectation.
Now, just three years later, Peggy Jean’s is operating at capacity. They are more popular than ever, delivering 19 different fruit pies, 18 different crème pies, 3 nut pies and 2 savory pies. With their location maxed out, they are turning back to Kickstarter to fund their Christmas wish for a mobile food truck. From their Kickstarter page:
This perfect truck is a 2005 Chevy Express 3500 Cutaway van. Because it has been previously used as a pie truck, it is completely ready to go once we add our logo (and buy some insurance because you know...state law). While will need to rebrand the truck with the PJP logo, but we anticipate no other modifications. If we told you how cute this truck was and just how clean and well-suited it is for spreading #worldpiedomination, you just wouldn't even believe it. IT IS AMAZING. Consider it PJP V. 2.5. And plan to see it in a parking spot near you soon.
Here at StorageMart, we love pies. We love supporting amazing charities through our #StoreItForward program. And we love supporting and investing in local business. To that end, we are donating $2,000 toward their $18,000 goal on Kickstarter. So far, they have raised just shy of the half-way mark, and have raised around $7,000.
