How to Organize Your Kitchen

Like most households, your kitchen is probably one of the most used areas in your house. It’s the heart of the home, where we cook and gather with family and friends. But it can also be one of the most cluttered and chaotic rooms in the house if you don’t take the time to keep it organized and clean.

When it comes to kitchen organization there are a few key areas that are always a challenge: small appliances, seasonal baking items, and just general pantry organization. If you’re looking for some great kitchen storage ideas, you’ve come to the right place!

Kitchen Organization Tips

First, I want to lay out some general suggestions on how to organize your kitchen before getting into the specifics. The first step is to do a deep clean of your kitchen. Take a good look at your countertops. If they’re cluttered with appliances, cookbooks, and other kitchen essentials. Invest in some countertop organizers or shelves to get everything into a designated space.

Next, go through your cabinets. If they are crammed full of pans, pots, and other dishes, it’s a sign you need to do some purging and reorganize. Take everything out and sort through what you actually need and use on a regular basis. You can donate or sell anything you don’t use regularly, and make sure to put everything back with easy access to the pots and pans you use most.

Also, don’t forget about the small things that can really make your kitchen feel cluttered and chaotic. Things like mail, keys, sunglasses, and wallets can often end up on your countertops or kitchen table. Try purchasing some small baskets or trays to corral these items and keep them off your kitchen surfaces.

Small Appliance Storage

If you find yourself constantly having to move around your coffee maker, blender, or toaster, it’s probably time to rethink your small appliance storage. One great way to keep your countertops clear is to invest in a kitchen cart or island. This will give you extra surface area for prep work while cooking and can also provide some much-needed storage space. Also, if you have a kitchen on the smaller side, check out this article on how to organize.

If you don’t have the room for a kitchen cart, try using a baker’s rack to store your small appliances. This way, they’re off the counter and out of the way, but still within easy reach.

Seasonal Baking Item Storage

If you love to bake, you probably have a lot of seasonal baking items that you only use a few times a year. Such as Christmas or Halloween themed cookie cutters. Rather than storing these items in your kitchen cabinets, where they’ll just take up valuable space, try using your basement or garage.

Or if you don’t have any extra storage space, consider renting a self storage unit. Aside from all your extra baking items, you can also store any duplicate small appliances you have or maybe even a mini fridge.

Pantry Organization

One of the hardest areas to keep organized is the pantry. If you find yourself constantly digging through piles of food and drinks to find what you’re looking for, it’s time to take a new approach to pantry organization.

One good way to do this is to invest in some clear storage containers. You can easily store things like rice, pasta, flour, and other items where they can easily be seen and organized. You can also label the containers so that you know exactly what is going where.

Another pantry organization tip is to use organizers such as a lazy Susan, sliding or stackable baskets for plates and cups, or step shelves for spices or canned foods. These are available for purchase online or at most home goods stores.

Extra Space with Self Storage

Hopefully some of these suggestions have helped you transform your kitchen into one that is clean and organized. If you find that despite buying storage containers or baskets you still don’t have enough room for all your pots and pans or other appliances, think about renting a self storage unit.
