National Foster Care Awareness Month: Swimsuit Drive

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month and our partners in MidMissouri are honoring foster parents in a big way. The Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association (CMFCAA) and One Simple Wish are celebrating foster families by hosting a Foster Family Appreciation Date to be held at Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson City, MO on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Attendance to the event was extended to foster families in Central Missouri and is by RSVP only.

StorageMart is making a splash this month and shedding some sunshine in the lives of foster kids by collecting new swimsuits of all sizes for boys and girls. The Swim Wear Collection drive will take place during the entire month of May. New swim wear may be dropped off during office hours at any StorageMart location in Columbia, MO or Jefferson City, MO. CMFCAA will collect the donations and distribute them to foster children in need.

A Gift Creates a Smile

“The need for swim wear is not a need people often identify with foster care”, says DeAnna Alonso, Executive Director of CMFCAA, “When these kids receive a gift, such as a new swim suit, it means a lot to them. They know someone thought about them, and it’s something they can call their own.” CMFCAA provides a clothing closet; however, regulations do not allow the organization to accept used swim wear. This year’s Swim Wear Collection drive comes just in time for CMFCAA’s summer tradition.

Each year, CMFCAA and BigSurf Waterpark in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri host a foster family event, offering discounted prices exclusive to foster families. This year’s Big Surf Foster Family Day will be Saturday, June 22, 2013.
